Divine Transition
“The LORD will make you the head, not the tail.” Deut. 28: 13
His head hung.
His shoulders drooped.
And, woe filled his being as he stood at the back of the line.
I was substitute teaching, and it was time for lunch. Initially, the little boy ran to the front of the line. His eyes shone. His laughter danced. But, it was all short-lived
The kids began screaming at him. “NO! NO! That’s not how we line up.”
And, he slunk to the back of the room.
That’s where I found him.
“What’s wrong?” I asked.
“I’ve never been first,” he told me. And he went on to explain that they lined up alphabetically – and his name started with a W. Also, they sometimes lined up according to numbers drawn from a bag at the beginning of the school year. He drew the very last number, so no matter what happened he was always last.
This time, he’d run to the front of the line hoping – just once – to lead the line. But the other kids dashed his hopes with how thing were “supposed to be.”
Well, I had a revelation: It wasn’t my classroom, but I was in charge. And I could line them up any which way I wanted to. So, I took his hand and led him to the front of the line. Again, the shouting began. “NO! NO! That’s not how Mr. Such-and-such does it.”
So, I explained, “Today, I’m in charge, and he’s the line leader.”
The boy beamed. And I was reminded that despite our circumstances, God is in control and in the twinkling of an eye He can change our position in life.
God said the first shall be last, and the last shall be first. God said His people were the head and not the tail. And as long as He’s in control – to my understanding, that’s through eternity – we have hope. We will not always be last no matter what the rules are.
No matter how it’s usually done – we win.
No matter how it looks – we win.
The end result will always be the same for a child of God – we win.
Know that I love you each, L.
